Heightening awareness that a perverse reality of exclusion can be changed, opening up new prospects for living with dignity. This was the approach that gave rise to the Family Dancing (Dançando em Família) Project in May 2004. Well aware of the social vulnerability of the families of the pupils involved in the projects run by the Dançando para Não Dançar NGO, identified as being the most needy, the Project Coordinators introduced immediate interventions mechanisms to help them. With the support of the Instituto Desiderata, these families were offered access to education and vocational training – as crucial steps for generating income and upgrading their quality of life ? in addition to social, psychological, medical and material assistance. They were also encourage to set up cooperatives and associations.
This Project started with ten families and currently assists sixty, living in various communities, including Mangueira, Rocinha, Pavão-Pavãozinho and Cantagalo. After many years out of school, one member of each family – usually the mother – goes back to school. During the three editions of this project, eight mothers completed high school, five entered university, nine are studying for their university entrance examinations, six have permanent jobs with signed work books, and the Buffet em Família catering cooperative was set up.
