Ceasm and Redes da Maré

Logo Ceasm e Redes da MaréIn 2000, a census of the Maré community disclosed another aspect of social inequality: 6% of its children and adolescents between seven and fourteen years old were not in school. Many of them and their families lived in utter poverty, at high social risk. Faced by this situation, the CEASM set up the Not One Less (Nenhum a Menos) project, which is designed to extend and strengthen the social safety net for an initial group of selected families. These efforts take place in the Nova Maré and Nova Holanda communities of the Maré Complex, with systematic social monitoring and the inclusion of the participants in the proposed social and educational activities.

Thanks to this initiative, 140 children and adolescents are now formally enrolled in school. The activities undertaken by this Project culminated in the launch of a publication on the Intersectoral Safety Net for Children and Adolescents with a History of Dropping Out of School in the Maré Community (Rede Intersetorial de Proteção à Criança e ao Adolescente com Histórico de Desescolarização na Maré), during a seminar held in this community in 2006, adding local public players to the quest striving to bring all children in the Maré community into the classroom.
