August 26th, 2009 New Visits to Municipal Schools enrich Education Area Knowledge Agenda

Dedicated teachers and tight-knit staffs working at medium-size schools for quite some time: these were the main common characteristics found at high-performing schools visited by the Education Staff of the Instituto Desiderata.  In contrast, large numbers of pupils, high staff turn-over and too few teachers - among other aspects related to school management - were the main points noted in schools whose performance falls below the municipal average.

Visits to schools in the Bangu district by the Education Area staff of the Instituto Desiderata underpinned ongoing reflections examining key issues that affect the quality of education in Rio de Janeiro.

The next step will include meetings with two Regional Education Coordination Units, in order to obtain even more detailed information on issues related to the government school network.  A working group will also be set up that will encompass a variety of players engaged with municipal education who are eager to help draw up the new Education Area programme.
