March 26th, 2009 Survey of Partnerships with Government Schools supported by the Municipal Education Bureau

Do public-private partnerships in Rio de Janeiro effectively help upgrade the quality of education in municipal schools? To what extent, and in what ways?

These are the questions guiding the survey being conducted in municipal schools in Rio de Janeiro, coordinated by the Institute Desiderata with the support of Municipal Education Secretary Cláudia Costin, who opened the doors of the Regional Education Coordination Units (CRE) to the research staff.

This survey will explore partnership experiences in Rio de Janeiro, examining some successful examples in greater depth. It is being conducted by two highly respected research institutes: Innova Pesquisa & Assessoria and Instituto Fonte. The findings will be available in July 2009.

Since 2003, the Instituto Desiderata has been investing in projects designed to foster the development of children and young people through linking up a wide variety of sectors of society in Rio de Janeiro. From 2008 onwards, it focused its investments on the Partnerships for Education Programme, supporting public-private cooperation actions designed to upgrade the quality of education offered by municipal schools in Rio de Janeiro. It hopes that these improvements will influence government policies for this sector.
