October 21st, 2009 Research project into partnerships presented to researchers at the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) in Rio de Janeiro

The research project entitled Partnerships with Municipal Schools in Rio de Janeiro , conducted by the Instituto Desiderata has really taken off, and is now cooperating in the preparation of new studies.

On October 9, it was presented to the staff of the Social Management in Schools Research Project, headed by Professor Marcelo Burgos of the Sociology Department, Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) in Rio de Janeiro and Professor Ralph Bannell with the Education Department at this university.

The Coordinator of this Partnerships Research Project, Patrícia Lacerda presented the methodology and the findings of this study, in order to contribute to the process of reflection and preparation of methodological tools for the Study of the Development of Social Management in Schools Located in Segregated Urban Areas, which is being implemented by an inter-disciplinary group at PUC.  The general objectives of this study are: to produce input for drawing up public policies designed to address the negative effects of urban segregation on government schools; to train graduate and post-graduate students in the skills required to operate in this sphere of public policies; to strengthen commitments among universities to upgrading basic government education; and to encourage social, cultural and integration among the residents of segregated areas through enhancing the value of government schools.

For the Instituto Desiderata, the exchange of experiences and the circulation of accumulated expertise are just as important as conducting studies, especially in order to cooperate with other research projects that extend knowledge of the real situation of municipal schools in Rio de Janeiro, contributing to the formulation of public policies.
