May 19th, 2009 IV Paediatric Oncology Event in Southern Rio de Janeiro State enhances awareness among medical students

Organised by the Paediatric Oncology League, Professor Fernando Werneck hosted this annual event, supported by the Instituto Desiderata. Its purpose was to prompt discussions among medical students at Vassouras University, exploring key issues arising from the care offered to children and youngsters with cancer. The participation of young musicians from the Integration through Music Programme in Vassouras delighted everyone at the opening ceremony of this event

The issue of early diagnosis was addressed during the first speech of the day, given by Dr. Gabriela Prior, a physician from the Hospital dos Servidores do Estado and an education strategy tutor from the United through the Cure (Unidos Pela Cura) Initiative, which encourages early diagnoses of childhood cancers in Rio de Janeiro. During the debate, the Paediatric Oncology Area Manager at the Instituto Desiderata, Glória Moog discussed the importance of networking with the administrators of the Brazil’s National Health System (SUS), in order to ensure clearly-defined routes for referring suspected cases of childhood cancers. All the attendees at this event were given folders presenting the main guidelines steering the efforts of the United through the Cure Initiative.

During the afternoon, Professor Fernando Werneck presented aspects of treating the most common types of childhood cancer, while Dr. Beatriz Eckardt from the National Cancer Institute (INCA) stressed the importance of palliative care and dilemmas faced during the treatment of childhood cancers.
