After a year of work, the five projects supported by this Programme
brought their activities to a close.
Linking community wisdom to classroom knowledge, endowing children and adolescents in the municipal education network with steeper learning curves in Rio de Janeiro - this was the challenge offered by the Instituto Desiderata when it issued the tender announcement for the Partnerships for Education Programme in December 2007. Its six partner organisations closed down their projects in June, involving twelve government schools.
At the end of a year of hard work with communities in Bangu and the Greater Tijuca region, where these projects were run, 421 children and adolescents were directly involved, with 226 families and 26 teachers. There were many outcomes and lessons learned, starting with the dialogue promoted among outreach organisations and schools, as well as schools and other organisations, fostering reflection on their practices, with discussions of common issues and possible joint actions. The know-how and methodologies of some projects were systematised and published, fostering the continuation of these efforts. Furthermore, a booklet presenting the experiences of this Programme will be launched in August.
“The purpose of this Programme was to encourage and support joint efforts among outreach organisations and schools. In practice, we became aware of the massive complexity of establishing these partnerships among institutions with such very different backgrounds and logics,” comments Instituto Desiderata Director Beatriz Azeredo. In order to extend knowledge of this topic, this Institute is completing a survey of public x private partnerships in the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Network, mentioned here in March, which will be disclosed at a Seminar held during the second half of 2009.
