August 7th, 2009 Nutrition Support Project launched for Children being treated for cancer at the Hospital dos Servidores

Last Monday, the first project under the Living and Winning (Vencer e Viver) Programme was launched in the Paediatric Oncology Area of the Instituto Desiderata.  Implemented under a partnership with the Association of Friends of the Paediatrics Wing at the Hospital dos Servidores do Estado, the Nutrition Support Outpatient Clinic Project is designed to prevent and correct malnutrition, helping upgrade the outcomes of the treatment and enhance the quality of life for children and young people with cancer.

This is a trail-blazing project, and the technical staff of this Hospital intends to extend it at a later stage, in order to upgrade the treatment of other chronic diseases.  To do so, it is necessary to provide evidence of the outcomes for oncology patients, in order to apply for the inclusion of the Project costs in the Hospital Budget, thus ensuring its sustainability.

According to Dr.  Kleiton Neves, the nutrologist physician in charge of this Project, this pilot venture will have to run for two years in order to obtain the proof required for submitting its outcomes to the Board of this Hospital.

The Instituto Desiderata will partner this Project throughout this entire period and an investor partner will also provide funding during this initial stage.
