Instituto Desiderata

ABOUT US

Founded in 2003 in Rio de Janeiro, Instituto Desiderata is a privately-owned NGO (OSCIP) which has always been innovative in its partnerships with the public sector in the areas of health care and education. Specifically we have been developing public policies that promote early diagnosis of child cancer and accessible quality treatment for children, as well as the improvement in teenage education in Rio de Janeiro.

MISSION STATEMENT

Helps formulate public policies in health and education that provide early diagnosis of child cancer and high quality treatment, and also quality education for teenagers.

OUR PRINCIPLES

Commitment. Dialog. Collectivity. Knowledge. Transparency.

OUR VISION

Help develop excellent public systems in conjuction with government institutions and the full participation of civil society.

HOW WE work?

In order to impact on public policies, we also work in partnership with the public sector and/or civil institutions on projects and programmes focused on:

Cancer is the biggest killer disease among 5 – 19 year-olds in Brazil. With early diagnosis and effective treatment the chances of a cure can reach 80%.

Our aim is to strengthen the public health service in order to guarantee early diagnosis and adequate treatment of childhood cancer in Rio de Janeiro.

We have set up training courses for health professionals and turned child cancer wards into friendlier and warmer places. And working with health professionals and their managers, as well as with other sectors of society, we have been proposing changes to public policies that will improve child cancer treatment.

ViDEOS

Junior high schools in Brazil have high rates of absenteeism and low rates of academic performance. Schools do not take account of adolescent culture, nor the way the teenagers learn and relate to each other.

We work with teachers, students and local government officials to develop policies that promote INCLUSIVE EDUCATION. The adolescents themselves are at the heart of this policy development.

To promote these policies we offer teacher training courses and we also produce and disseminate relate information packages.
