Ever since it was first established, the Instituto Desiderata has sought out opportunities for investments that help extend the supply of good quality Paediatric Oncology services in Rio de Janeiro, establishing the Living and Winning (Vencer e Viver) Programme for this purpose. The resulting lessons learned showed that investments in Rio de Janeiro must be channelled to the public network, as this is where the specialised care facilities are structured that work with the National Health System (SUS), treating most of the patients affected by these diseases. It also became apparent that the issue of autonomous management of public healthcare units is a key factor for the sustainability of investments in this field.
Consequently, the Institute has been monitoring discussions on Draft Bills, such as that proposing that public healthcare units belonging to the direct Civil Service be turned into public foundations under private law. Furthermore, the Institute invests in setting up public x private partnerships that can offer high quality services in response to specific demands, boosting the success of oncology treatments. This is what occurred with the Children’s Imaging Centre Project, which is being implemented jointly with the Imagem Solidária civil society organisation, the Rio de Janeiro Federal University and its Paediatrics Institute, and public health administrators in Rio de Janeiro State, in order to ensure easier access for children and young people to imaging examinations that are vital for early diagnoses and treatments.
