Youth Accommodation / Teen Ward

Logo Hospedaria JuvenilIn general, few specific areas set aside for young people in hospitals, with young teenagers even being treated with adults, although only twelve or thirteen years old. Well aware that adolescence is a very specific phase for personal development, requiring a different type of constant care, the Instituto Desiderata is encouraging hospitals to set aside treatment areas especially for young people.

. The Youth Accommodation / Teen Ward (Hospedaria Juvenil) Project was also developed through a partnership with Gringo Cardia, in response to a request from the State Haematology Institute named in honour of Arthur Siqueira Cavalcante (Hemorio) which was eager to set aside an exclusive area for treating hospitalised adolescents.

The first Youth Accommodation / Teen Ward (Hospedaria Juvenil) Project was inaugurated in December 2008 at Hemorio, financed by partner Posto 9 Produções, and also supported by the Instituto Gaylussac school . This is a wonderful example of how civil society can help strengthen public health policies.

Similar to the other projects covered by the Extending the Welcome (Ampliando o Acolher) Programme, the Instituto Desiderata also monitored the first 24 months of its activities after implementation, through overseeing and assessing the outcomes, building up the sustainability indicators for this project in partnership with the hospital staff.

The purpose of the Institute is to ensure the feasibility of establishing Teen Wards in all public hospitals with Paediatric Oncology Units in Rio de Janeiro. To do so, it is striving to identify investor partners engaged with and committed to this cause.
