This project was implemented in 2005 ? 2006, through a partnership with the Support Centre for Children with Cancer (NACC) in Recife, underpinning the feasibility of reproducing a collection of books with information for patients and their families. In all, 400 collections of the series on Understanding and Participating in the Treatment of Childhood Cancers (Entendendo e Participando do Tratamento do Câncer) were made available to Paediatric Oncology Units in the City of Rio de Janeiro.
The multi-professional staff submitted proposals for using the books with patients and their families. Additionally, the Instituto Desiderata organised meetings for exchanging experiences among hospital staff, which is a practice common to all projects under the Extending the Welcome (Ampliando o Acolher) Programme building up stronger links and enriching the specialised network that treats and cares for childhood cancers in Rio de Janeiro. Three entities participated in this project in 2005 and 2006: Hemorio, the Paediatrics Institute at the Rio de Janeiro Federal University (UFRJ) and the Hospital Mário Kröeff.
