The Be Capable (Ser Capaz) Programme underwrote projects run by outreach organisations that make a difference, working with children and young people in Rio de Janeiro State between 2003 and 2007. The strategies adopted by this Programme broadened the range of opportunities opening up to each of these youngsters, ensuring their rights to full personal and professional development.
Since this Programme was launched, it has supported projects run by eleven outreach organisations working in several communities on different issues and with a broad range of age brackets among children and young people. This diversity allowed the Instituto Desiderata to explore and learn about the third sector universe in Rio de Janeiro, helping strengthen these organisations that are so important in the areas where they operate. The partner institutions and their projects were a vital channel for these efforts, as it is through them that children, young people and their families are directly assisted, while also generating new work methodologies.
At the same time, the Institute invested in a networking structure, establishing a context of exchanges and reflections among the staff of the institution involved, bringing out the full potential of the work undertaken by each of them through the Learn (Aprender) Programme. In parallel, capacity-building sessions were held and tools were developed for upgrading the administration of institutions while fine-tuning project oversight, drawing up an agenda for the institutional strengthening of the partners engaged in the Develop (Desenvolver) Programme.
