May 18th, 2010 Megaphone at School Workshops Begin

Last week, pupils and teachers at forty secondary schools in the Rio de Janeiro Municipal network began to attend the workshops being organised for the Megaphone at School project.

During these workshops, the pupils learned more about the purpose of this project, coming into contact for the first time with the matrix of the questionnaire that they will use and fine-tune during the initial survey meetings. Through dynamic activities, pupils from many different schools got to know each other better and talked about that they see as the challenges for secondary education.

“In addition to training the pupils as researchers, these workshops are places where they can exchange opinions on what they think about school. This time of group reflection is something that they have little experience of in their daily classroom routines,” explained Desiderata Director Beatriz Azeredo.

Of the five hubs clustering the forty schools engaged in this project, Vila Isabel, Vila Kosmos and Campo Grande have already held their first workshops, with Vila Valqueire and Taquara following in their footsteps this week.

Conceptualised by the Instituto Desiderata, the Megaphone at School project is a participative consultation that trains schoolchildren to interview their classmates and teachers in order to discover how schools view the challenges faced by secondary education (6th ? 9th grades) in Brazil.
