August 20th, 2009 Desiderata Education Staff visits Schools in the Rio Municipal Network

Plenty of questions, an attentive ear and the desire to gain hands-on knowledge of the real situation of schools in the Rio de Janeiro municipal network: these are the elements guiding the new School Visits Agenda launched yesterday by the Education Area at the Instituto Desiderata.

This Agenda opened with two schools in very different settings, one in the Vidigal community (E. M. Almirante Tamandaré) and the other (E. M. Baptista Pereira) in Andaraí.  The Desiderata staff talked at some length with the personnel at both these schools (principals, assistant principals and education coordinators), touring their facilities and learning about their daily routines, escorted by Luisa Ribeiro, the Basic Education Manager at the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Education Bureau.

Using this the time of reflection to define a new investment strategy for the Education Area, which now intends to work through contributing directly to public policies, these school visits are designed to allow on-site observation of issues that are being raised intalks between Desiderata and a wide variety of players, including outreach organisations and private investors, and more specifically the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Education Bureau.

These visits will continue during the coming weeks, initially to schools in the Bangu district.
