April 14th, 2010 URGENT – Summer Storms batter Santa Teresa in Rio

Dear Partners,

The recent storms buffeting Rio de Janeiro caused particularly severe problems for the Morro dos Prazeres community in Santa Teresa, with lives lost in landslides that swept away homes and left entire families destitute.

We have received requests for help from two outreach organisations that are already backed by the Instituto Desiderata: Praticável and the Santa Teresa Ballet, which have devoted many years of hard work to upgrading the quality of life and education for children and adolescents from communities in the Santa Teresa district. These organisations deserve our support and solidarity at this tragic time, in order to help families whose homes and belongings have been swept away or are no longer accessible. We thus issue a call for donations that can be dropped off at the following addresses.

Items required:
- Non-perishable foods and drinking water;
- Basic toiletries and throw-away diapers;
- Cooking utensils: pans, dishes, plates, cutlery, etc.
- Clothing and footwear for children and adults;
- Mattresses, sleeping mats, sheets and towels.

All and any assistance is welcome!

Drop-Off Addresses for donations:
1.Colégio Estadual Monteiro de Carvalho (shelter) Rua Almirante Alexandrino, 2495, Santa Teresa.
2.2. Centro Cultural Municipal Laurinda Santos Lobo Rua Monte Alegre, 306, Santa Teresa, tel. 2241-9741
