Use audiovisual language as a way of making schools more attractive to their pupils, with steeper learning curves: how can this be done simply, with equipment available in any classroom? The Cecip People’s Picture Centre presents a great solution through the Chalk to Pixel (Do Giz ao Pixel) booklet on Extending the Range in the Classroom, which offers step-by-step instructions on how to produce videos by shooting with digital still cameras and then editing the pictures in a user-friendly computer programme.
This Digital Camera Movie-maker’s Guide (Guia do cineasta da máquina fotográfica digital) presents the experiences, testimonials and methodologies deployed through the Chalk to Pixel (Do Giz ao Pixel) Projectrun in 2008 - 2009 by the Cecip Centre in municipal schools in do Rio de Janeiro, with the support of the Instituto Desiderata. This project wagered on building up the capacities of teachers and pupils, showing them how to produce videos using still digital cameras, diversifying the repertoire of educational practices in these schools and encouraging the collective construction of creative projects while establishing closer links between teens and their teachers. “Not only were the educators charmed by the world of possibilities opened up to them by this new language, they also explored a cooperative methodology through which their pupils learn and then pass these skills on to their friends, relatives and classmates, and even adults as well,” says Cecip Director Claudius Ceccon,.
Using the project methodology systematically explained in the booklet, this experiment can be replicated in other schools. Desiderata Director Beatriz Azeredo stresses that “This project offers excellent outcomes for its participants and these booklets ensure its continuity, presenting the content in a bright and simple layout. Today youngsters learn fastest through cutting-edge technologies. It is important for schools to be aware of this and keep pace,” she notes
This booklet is available for download (in Portuguese) from the Instituto Desiderata website - and some of the videos made through this project in Municipal schools in Rio de Janeiro are available for viewing on YouTube.
