In order to structure its programmes, studies are commissioned and networking and familiarisation meetings are held with the main players supporting early diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancers in Rio de Janeiro.
All the Oncology Area Programmes, include events that encourage networking and the production of knowledge, attended by practitioners from the public sector and civil society organisations in Rio de Janeiro and other States.

The purpose of First Workshop organised by the Instituto Desiderata was to gather together practitioners from the main childhood cancer treatment centres in the City of Rio de Janeiro, as well as senior management from the National Cancer Institute (INCA), the State and Municipal Health Bureaus and representatives of the Rio de Janeiro State Paediatrics Society (SOPERJ) and the Brazilian Paediatric Oncology Society (SOBOPE), in order to discuss issues linked to the treatment flows for this line of care.
The purpose of the II Workshop was to qualify discussions along two main lines of work in the Paediatric Oncology Area of the Instituto Desiderata: encouraging early diagnoses and upgrading the treatment conditions for childhood cancers in Rio de Janeiro. Outstanding examples from other parts of Brazil were presented, contributing to the discussions and enhancing the efforts of all.
Early diagnosis of childhood cancers is the first and most important step for reaching a cure. For the first time in Rio de Janeiro, the Municipal Health Bureau, supported by the Instituto Desiderata, launched an initiative that invited all the main players linked to paediatric care and the treatment of childhood cancers to develop a broad-ranging and ongoing strategy in order to change the widespread situation resulting in late diagnoses of paediatric neoplasias.
The purpose of the III Workshop run by the Living and Winning (Vencer e Viver) Programme is to launch the mobilisation process for building up joint responsibilities supporting the United through the Cure (Unidos Pela Cura) Initiative through discussions of the following points:
- Operating framework of the Initiative
- Engagement and role of each institution in attendance
- Listing priorities for the three lines of action by the Initiative
The Satellite Symposium organised by the Instituto Desiderata at the X Brazilian Paediatric Oncology Congress was designed to underpin the efforts of practitioners committed to urging early diagnosis of childhood cancers in Brazil. To do so, it organised a discussion of successful experiences in the field of organising paediatric care focused on early diagnosis of paediatric cancers, and consequently identifying other childhood diseases. This was also a great opportunity to disseminate and discuss the United through the Cure (Unidos Pela Cura) Initiative, which was being launched in Rio de Janeiro.
The IV Workshop gathered together representatives of the five main Paediatric Oncology Units in Rio de Janeiro, the Coordinators of the Quimioteca Chemotherapy Treatment Playroom at GRAACC, the Orsa Foundation, and the administrators of the Humaniza SUS project calling for the humanisation of care through Brazil’s scuff, at all three spheres of government. The purpose was to discover the challenges of implementing a project such as the Quimioteca, which extends far beyond merely adapting the physical space set aside for outpatient chemotherapy rooms in hospitals.
Time was set aside at this event for discussion and participative construction of the concept of humanising paediatric chemotherapy rooms in Rio de Janeiro based on the views of the multi-professional team of the reality of the network providing care and treatment for childhood cancers in this City.
The V Workshop organised by the Paediatric Oncology Area was designed to present and discuss the rich process of reflecting on the conditions and expectations of the Paediatric Oncology Units involved in drawing up a project for humanising chemotherapy facilities in Rio de Janeiro. The discussions and knowledge produced by this event contributed to the successful implementation of the Chemotherapy Rooms Humanisation Project (Aquário Carioca), which was initially implemented at the Hospital dos Servidores do Estado and the Martagão Gesteira Childcare and Paediatrics Institute in 2007.
The Instituto Desiderata was privileged to support and participate in the Paint Fest, a painting festival run by the Foundation for Hospital Art that was organised at the Hospital dos Servidores do Estado on May 1.
The purpose of the Foundation for Hospital Art is to turn every hospital in the world into na attractive place for recovering patients; for many years it has been a partner of the Centro Infantil Boldrini children’s centre in Campinas. The Director of this institution, Dr. Silvia Brandalise, recommended the Instituto Desiderata as the organiser of the Paint Fest in Rio de Janeiro. We suggested the Paediatrics Unit of the Hospital dos Servidores do Estado as the beneficiary of this event, due to the acknowledged quality of its work, as well as the long-standing partnership between this institution and the Instituto Desiderata.
Foundation Director artist John Feight and his volunteers were warmly welcomed by the staff of the Hospital dos Servidores. This painting morning provided an unparallel chance for patients, their families and practitioners to relax and enjoy themselves on this holiday. In all, twelve canvasses were painted, arranged into two colourful panels, alive with flowers and animals. Additionally, walls and doors were painted throughout the entire paediatrics floor of this hospital – and even the ITU was invaded by butterflies and flowers!
Over the past few years, a significant trend has been noted in Rio de Janeiro that is networking and integrating the main players linked to the cause of childhood cancers, resulting in joint efforts. Building up an integrative vision that gathers together the values shaping the identity of these efforts and highlighting opportunities for bringing out the full potential of their outcomes was the purpose of the VI Workshop organised by the Paediatric Oncology Area that gathered together practitioners from the public network, administrators of Brazil’s SUSS, residents and civil society organisations.
